In a Minute

Written for my Mum

In a Minute

I remember you would call me,
For some reason or other
I always gave the same reply,
‘Just a minute’.
So you would wait,
Patiently,
For the spoilt child
Who may or may not come.

When you needed help with something,
The same answer came,
The one we all regret,
‘I’ll be there in a minute!’
And you would wait,
Quietly,
For the self absorbed teenager
Who had more important things to do.

I remember the day you left me,
Silently, peacefully, gracefully,
But I know you heard me whisper,
‘I’ll join you in a minute’,
And so you wait,
Serenely,
For the daughter who loves you
To join you forever.
